Retrace – MKG127

For her first exhibition at MKG127, Retrace, Jaime Angelopoulos will present new sculptures and drawings that explore an abstracted personal narrative interwoven with mythological folklore. Angelopoulos is drawn to mythology for its ability to distill human attributes into symbolic characters. In her art practice she translates subjective experiences of sensation, emotions and behavior into physical form through the mediums of sculpture and drawing. Her process begins as intuitive images in her mind followed by the writing of poems or anecdotes. The process of writing gives rise to personal experiences that underlie her actions in the studio. Drawing is a critical tool for mapping out ideas and emotions through an exploratory process. Her sculptures evoke human gesture while narrative-based titles invite identification within the viewer. Although her practice is autobiographical in nature, it is her hope that it may function as a metaphor for contemporary experience.

Jaime Angelopoulos received her MFA from York University (2010), BFA from NSCAD (2005) and also studied at Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas, TX (2006-07). She was awarded the Hazelton Sculpture Prize in 2013 and has participated in artist residencies at KulttuuriKauppila Art Centre (Finland) and the Banff Centre (Alberta). Selected solo exhibitions include Parisian Laundry (Montreal), YYZ Artist Outlet (Toronto) and Cambridge Galleries (Ontario). She recently presented two-person exhibitions, The Ruin in The Refuge is the Hole (Finland) and Awkward Dimensions at LVL3 Gallery (Chicago). Select group exhibitions include, Material Girls at the Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina), Out Of Line at Oakville Galleries and trans/FORM at MOCCA (Toronto). Her works are held in the collections of York University, Bank of Montreal, The Hazelton Hotel, Norton Rose, ALDO Group, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Claridge and numerous private collections in Canada, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Miami. Jaime’s work is included in Rizzoli New York’s new publication, “Feelings: Soft Art”.
