The London Series

Sara Graham has developed the works that comprise The London Series, through her research into the physical and psycho geographies of London, Ontario toward her upcoming exhibition at Museum London in the fall of 2010. Graham inserts new city features and abstractions into historical maps of London as a starting point for interjecting new historical narratives of the city into existing ones. The series is unified through Graham’s use of cartography as a starting point for her construction of physical prototypes that could be inserted in real places in London to connect the actual and imaginary histories that she maps.

The London Series is part of an ongoing project entitled Citymovement, a multidisciplinary project that examines and documents how we shape and are shaped by systems through the development and presentation of product design objects and prototypes that explore the boundaries between art, design, urban form and architecture.

Sara Graham has been primarily concerned with the issues and ideas of the contemporary city. Her current work explores (and explodes) geographic fictions, through the means and methods of architecture, urban planning and art. She is specifically engaged in a cross-disciplinary approach that incorporates philosophical, cultural, sociological and architectural criticism of the nature and condition of the city and city life. Graham has upcoming exhibitions at Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Museum London, and the Kenderdine Art Gallery at the University of Saskatchewan. She was a finalist for the 2009 Toronto Friends of the Visual Arts Artist Prize. This is her second solo exhibition at MKG127.
